The Protestant Association of South Africa (PASA) is a fellowship of individual Protestants who, since 1925, have stood together to guard and proclaim the historic truths of the Reformation in our land.

We are not a church or a denomination, but an association of believers from various Protestant traditions who share a deep commitment to:

  • Sola Scriptura – Scripture alone as the infallible rule of faith and practice
  • Sola Fide – Justification by faith alone
  • Sola Gratia – Salvation by grace alone
  • Solus Christus – Christ alone as Mediator and Saviour
  • Soli Deo Gloria – To the glory of God alone

Rooted in the Evangelical groundswell of the early 20th century – two years after the Bible Institute of South Africa was founded in 1923 – PASA was born to counter doctrinal compromise and to uphold classical Protestant orthodoxy amid the challenges of the Union era and beyond.

Our Calling

Through our flagship publication, Protestant Reveille (continuously published since 1945), we:

  • Defend Biblical Christianity against pluralism, ecumenism, and cultural drift
  • Call believers back to revival, personal holiness, and Scriptural truth as taught by the Apostles
  • Draw wisdom from the heritage of Christians that have come before us, such as the Reformers, Puritans and other servants of God
  • Comment faithfully on South African life; moral, cultural, political, and ecclesiastical – from a conservative Reformed perspective
  • Stand in solidarity with persecuted Christians in Africa and the Middle East
  • Encourage fidelity to Scripture in an age of confusion.

We function as both watchmen and encouragers: preserving Protestant memory, connecting believers across denominations, and reminding the church that we are "always on the winning side" when we stand on God's unchanging Word.

A Legacy Carried Forward

One of the most influential voices in our history was Rev. Athelstone Harry Jeffree James (A.H. Jeffree James), the English-born Baptist minister who became a South African Evangelical legend. After arriving in South Africa in January 1945, Rev. James took up the position of PASA secretary under the chairmanship of DG Mills. He consolidated and expanded PASA, furthering the work that was envisaged and meaningfully prepared for during the 2nd World War, and earlier.

  • Former President of the Baptist Union of S.A.
  • Long-time Secretary of PASA and Chairman of the Bible Institute of South Africa
  • Visionary behind the Protestant Book centre (Mowbray), providing access to IVP, Tyndale, and other faithful literature.
  • Established the Reveille as official PASA publication in 1945.
  • 60-year associate of the Bible Society of South Africa
  • Remained editor of the Reveille until his passing in May 2011, at 95 yrs old.
